Developing Safe Workplaces

Comprehensive Safety Training for Construction Site Workers

Making a living shouldn't have to cost you your life. Workplace fatalities, injuries, and illnesses are preventable. Safe jobs happen because employers make the choice to fulfill their responsibilities and protect their workers.

The estimated cost of occupational injuries and illnesses are from $145 billion to $290 billion a year for direct and indirect costs.

When you know your rights, and when employers act responsibly to prevent hazards, the result will be fewer worker deaths, injuries and illnesses. Training and education are key in making this happen.

Employer Responsibilities

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, employers are required to try to eliminate or reduce hazards first by making changes in working conditions rather than just relying on masks, gloves, ear plugs or other types of personal protective equipment (PPE). Switching to safer chemicals, enclosing processes to trap harmful fumes, or using ventilation systems to clean the air are examples of effective ways to get rid of or minimize risks.

Employers MUST:

1. Inform employees about hazards through training, labels, alarms, color-coded systems, chemical information sheets, and other methods.
2. Keep accurate records of work-related injuries and illnesses.
3. Perform tests in the workplace, such as air sampling required by some OSHA standards.
4. Provide hearing exams or other medical tests required by OSHA standards.
5. Post-OSHA citations, injury and illness data, and the OSHA poster in the workplace where workers will see them.
6. Notify OSHA within 8 hours of a workplace incident in which there is a death or when three or more workers go to a hospital.
7. Not discriminate or retaliate against a worker for using their rights under the law.

Most construction fatalities are caused by
1. Fall Hazards
2. Electrocution
3. Struck By (e.g., falling objects, trucks, cranes)
4. Caught-In or Between e.g., trench hazards, equipment)
